The Driving Force
Behind GAAST

The Global Aviation and Aerospace Skills Taskforce (GAAST) was conceived in response to the significant challenges and changes the aviation and aerospace sectors have faced in recent years.

The impetus for GAAST’s formation came from a critical need identified during the global pandemic, which saw the aviation workforce contract by approximately 43%, equating to a loss of 4.8 million jobs worldwide.

This contraction highlighted not only the vulnerability of the workforce to global crises but also underscored the evolving nature of work in the sector, driven by technological advancements, sustainability goals, and changing workforce demographics.

As the industry began to rebound, the shortage of skilled professionals became more acute, with many who left the sector hesitant to return. This scenario, coupled with fierce competition for talent and a need to adapt to future trends, necessitated a unified, global response. The UK Department for Transport, Airports Council International, the International Air Transport Association, and the International Coordinating Council of Aerospace Industries Associations coalesced to form GAAST, aiming to bridge the talent gap and ensure a resilient, future-proof workforce.

Building tomorrow

Leverage the collective expertise of member states and organizations to identify, share, and implement best practices in workforce development, aiming to elevate the global standard of aviation and aerospace skills.

Develop comprehensive strategies to attract a diverse pool of talent into the aviation and aerospace sectors. This includes enhancing the industry’s value proposition and engaging with untapped demographics through innovative outreach programs.

Identify and promote effective programs for the ongoing development, upskilling, and retention of the workforce. This encompasses creating clear career pathways, facilitating lifelong learning, and ensuring job satisfaction and loyalty within the industry.

Advocate for and support the establishment of workplace environments that are safe, inclusive, and conducive to personal and professional growth. A positive culture is key to attracting and retaining top talent.

Look towards the future with a focus on understanding how technological advancements, changing demographics, and global trends will shape the skills and roles required in the aviation and aerospace industries. The taskforce aims to prepare the workforce today for the jobs of tomorrow, ensuring the industry remains at the forefront of innovation and efficiency.
